My mother got me a sewing machine about 4 years ago for Christmas. Since then I have been saying I would make her a patchwork quilt. I had lots of other ideas for presents too, such as hand warmers, aprons, cushions etc. So what have I done with it so far? I've used it on cards and scrapbook pages. Lame, I know.
I have been pinning lots of sewing projects on Pinterest to inspire me. So far, up until this morning I hadn't anything to show for all my ideas. Yesterday I bought the first issue of that new quilting magazine ("the art of quilting" I think). There's a few pieces of material free with it to get you started and some needles and thread. The first issue was nice and cheap but the price jumps up from the next issue so I doubt I'll buy it any more, but I am going to look for material on-line instead to keep me going.
Anyway this morning I got stook in to my quilt and got the first square completed! It's far from being perfect but I'm happy with it. After all these years I finally have something to show! I think it has actually given me the confidence to do more, because I was so afraid it would be a disaster and totally put me off! Here's what I've got so far....

I made a birthday card today for my hubby's Goddaughter. I took the easy route and used a happy hoppers image that I had already coloured in. I love when I find coloured in images in my stamped image box :) Some days I just like to colour and other days I want to make something.

I used some MME paper and her name was stamped with mini studio g stamps. I added a little glitter to the name, the bunnies feet and to the balloons.

Cold soothing drink recipe

Hello everyone, I hope you are all enjoying the new year.

I woke up yesterday with a cold and sore throat. Today it's no better but no worse either. Whenever a cold strikes our home, I always make up this cold soothing drink.

Cold Soothing Drink

1 heaped t. of honey
1 heaped t. of blackcurrant jam or apple jelly
2 t. of lemon juice
pinch of chilli flakes or cayenne
6 leaves of lemon verbena (optional)
You can also grate in some ginger to taste (I'm not a big fan of ginger)

Put all the ingredients into a cup and pour in some freshly boiled water. Stir and drink.

I try and drink this 3-4 times a day and I find it really helps soothe a sore throat. The vitamin c in the lemon juice and the immune boosting properties of the chilli and the antibacterial properties of honey can't be bad either.

Candy cane cookies

I recently came across a recipe for candy cane cookies and I just had to try it. I am so glad I did because they are awesome! If you could scoop up Christmas and put it in a cookie, this is what it would be!
For the icing, instead of sprinkling the crushed candy canes on top, I added a drop or two of peppermint essence into the icing and drizzled it over as I thought the cookies were pretty enough without sprinkling more candy canes on top and the peppermint essence added the mint flavour in a nice fresh zingy way. Plus it leaves more candy canes to make more cookies with :)

Candy Cane Snowballs

3 c. powdered/icing sugar, divided
1 1/4 c butter, softened
2 t. vanilla
1 egg
3 c. flour
1 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
3/4 c. finely crushed candy canes, divided
1/2 c. granulated sugar
2-3 T. milk

1. In a mixing bowl, beat 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar and butter until fluffy. Add vanilla and egg and beat until combined.
2. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. Stir to combine. Slowly add to mixing bowl, beating until combined, about 1 minute. Stir 1/2 cup finely crushed candy canes in by hand.
3. Roll dough into small balls using just under a teaspoon of dough. Rolls balls through granulated sugar to coat and place on baking sheet. Bake at 350f/180c degrees for 10-12 minutes. Cool.
4. While the cookies bake, stir together remaining 1 1/2 c. powdered sugar with 2-3 T. of milk. Add just enough milk to form a thick glaze. Drizzle over cooled cookies and top with remaining crushed candy canes. Or instead of topping with crushed candy canes, add a drop or two of peppermint essence in with the milk, stir into the sugar until well combined and then drizzle over cookies.

Christmas fudge

Good morning blogging friends. There isn't anything necessarily Christmasy about this fudge, but that said, I have been making it every year for Christmas for a long time now.

My mother loves fudge so as a stocking filler I started making this for her and now it's just a given that she will get a jar full. Put in a pretty jar or placed in some cellophane bags (there's lots of different sizes on Amazon) tied with a bow, it makes the perfect gift. This Rachel Allen recipe is my favourite.

Fudge

1x375g tin of condensed milk
100g butter
450g caster sugar

Place the condensed milk, butter and sugar in a saucepan. Stir and bring to a boil. Boil for about 10 minutes, stirring all the time, until it reaches a soft ball stage. To test for this, put 1/2 a teaspoonfull of the fudge into a bowl of cold water, it should be firm but malleable.
Remove from heat and sit the bottom of the pan in a sink/bowl of cold water that comes 2-3 cm up the outside of the pan. Stir until the fudge cools and goes thick and grainy.
Scrape out the contents into a 8x8 inch tin. Flatten out the fudge until its about 1/2 - 3/4 inch thick. Let cool and cut into squares.
If you would like to add some flavouring to your fudge such as vanilla, peppermint, coffee etc. you can add a drop or two in at the start. I usually just leave it plain.

Good afternoon everyone! Today I played along with a Handmade holiday blog hop on Amanda's blog and a handmade gifts challenge on Annabelle stamps. I made some mini wreaths that I was inspired to make by some I came across on Pinterest. I used some old curtain rings and some ribbon and bling from my stash. The were really easy to do. The wreaths that inspired me are at the end of this post and here is a link to the blog.

These are my two and they were so easy I'm definitely going to make more!

A Christmas window display...

Hello blogging friends, I have been a really bad blogger and crafter lately. I can't believe we are now at the end of November and Christmas is only 26 days away! How did that happen?????

I made mine from beer mats (I have quite a few), as I'm not the most patient of people I just decorated the front but you could of course decorate the back too and hang them in a window where you could see both sides.

My kids birthday's are definately two of my favourite days of the year. I love how they count down the days and the excitement on their faces when it comes to opening their presents. The bowling alley is one of our favourite places to go and we spent this birthday there. So I have included two favourites on this page.

I got this clipboard a while back for €1.99 and thought it was about time I gave it a makeover! I used some of my favourite paper - Crate Paper cottage style.

Hello all! There's a brand new monthly challenge on Love Joy Paper. This month's theme is to create a page using at least 2 photos spanning a period of time. I used a sketch from Sassy lil' sketches and some Papermania pp. I inked some chipboard letters and then dabbed an eraser into some brown ink and stamped on some dots. I then glazed over them using diamond glaze. Scrapbookers anonymous have a challenge on to use chipboard so I'm also submitting this LO to their challenge.

Holiday fun

After months of hibernation, I think I'm finally back! This is my second card this week!!!! I know, shock, horror! I really need to get stuck into the Christmas cards so I made this one for Just Magnolia's holiday fun.

Fruit & Veggies

There hasn't been much crafting fo me lately, but I have been keeping busy by growing some fruit and veg. Thankfully there has been a lot more triumphs than failures :)

As we have a tiny garden I thought I would try growing everything in pots and grow bags. Because of this, they are all nicely raised up and stay relatively weed free :) So far this year I have successfully grown lettuce, tomatoes, courgettes, chilli's, strawberries and a selection of herbs. I can't wait to try the potatoes, turnips, carrots, peas, beans and sweet peppers that are still growing/ripening.
If you have been thinking about growing fruit or veg you really should give it a try. I can't believe how easy it has been! The only failure I have had, has been the raspberries. Maybe I'll have more luck with those next year.

I've also had lots of fun using my fruit and veggies in lots of recipes from Neven's latest book :)

More St. Patrick's day recipes....

Here are a few more recipes from my collection:

Irish Soda Bread

400g flour
350mls buttermilk

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 tsp salt
1 tsp caster sugar

Preheat oven to 230c. Put all the dry ingredients

into a large bowl & mix together. Add milk & bring

the mixture together with an outstretched hand. Pat

the dough into a round shape & place on a lightly

floured tray. Cut a cross into the top. Bake for 15mins

then lower the temperature to 200c & bake for a further

30mins. Remove from oven & allow to cool upside down.

Serve with butter.

Dublin Coddle

450g sausages 450g bacon

1 large onion diced 5 carrot sliced

5 potatoes peeled & cut into chunks

vegetable stock salt & pepper

parsley

Put the meat & vegetables into a large pot & pour over enough

stock to cover. Bring to the boil & simmer for 1 ½ hours. Season

& garnish with the parsley. Serve with white soda bread.

Colcannon Cakes

400g of potatoes 150g of cabbage

20g of butter 1 egg beaten

Salt & pepper 3 tbsp of flour

Cook the potatoes for about 25mins in boiling salted

water until tender. Peel while they are still warm & mash

with some butter. In a separate pot, cook the cabbage

until tender & drain. Put the cabbage into a blender &

whiz until smooth. Mix the potatoes & cabbage together.

Stir in the beaten egg & season. Shape the potato cakes

into 2.5cm rounds. Dip in the flour & shake off any excess.

Heat the butter in a frying pan & fry the potato cakes until

golden.

Seeing that I haven't been crafting lately and St. Patrick's day is only a week a way, I thought I would post some Irish themed recipes over the next week. Here's the first one:

Guinness Burgers

5lbs of beef mince,

1 small onion finely chopped,

1 clove of garlic grated,

¼ can of Guinness draught

2 tbsp tomato sauce or paste,

salt,

ground black pepper

Put all the ingredients in a bowl, add half the Guinness

and mix well.

Roll into 10 burger shapes

Place the burgers onto a hot BBQ and cook for 6-7 minutes

Brush the burgers with the remaining Guinness

Turn burgers and cook for a further 6-7 minutes

Serve in a warm bun with all your favourite trimmings

*These can be made on a pan instead of a bbq

and here's another:

Irish Porter Cake

450g plain flour

1 tsp grated nutmeg

1 tsp mixed spice

1 tsp baking powder

pinch of salt

225g butter

225g brown sugar

450g raisins

75g candied peel

2 eggs

1 x 330ml bottle of porter/stout (e.g. Guinness)

Preheat oven to 180c/350f. Line the sides & base of a 20cm round

cake tin with greaseproof paper. Sieve the first four ingredients

together. Rub in the butter, then stir in the sugar, raisins & candied

peel. Whisk the porter/stout & the eggs together. Pour into the dry

ingredients & mix well. Empty into the prepared tin & bake for about

2 hours. The cake is cooked when a skewer inserted into the centre

comes out clean. Allow to sit in the tin for 20 minutes before turning

out onto a wire rack.

Sweet Sketch & Scrapbook Challenges

Good morning blogging friends! This is my first post in a few weeks! My crafting mojo went on holiday for quite a while :( but this week I received a package full of lovely crafty goodies from my super sweet friend Vicky and it gave me the kick I needed to do some crafting :) One of the goodies was this really cute Peachy Keen "happy bird" stamp! This is my first PK stamp and I love it! I used a Sweet Sketch Wednesday sketch and some Papermania buttons, flowers and rose garden paper.

I also made a scrapbook page using some holiday photos from Barcelona last year and sketch 237 from Scrapbook challenges. The pp is DCWV and the embellishments are Papermania rose garden collection.

Did you ever have one of those days where you wish you hadn't got up? Well I have had two of them! It has been freezing so heavy lately that our pipes are frozen and we have been without water for the last two days, grrrr! I have baking I want/need to get done, a mountain of laundry, floors to clean and a full dishwasher and I can't do any of it. It doesn't look like the weather is going to improve much over the next few days either :(

Good evening! I finally got around to some scrapping this evening, it feels like forever since I scrapped! I used a sketch from Sketchy Thursday and some funny photos of my youngest, trying to eat his dinner at his Granny's house. He had some competition, all four cats gathered around him, it was so funny! For us anyway :) He on the other hand (he loves his Granny's dinners) was not impressed!

Magical Monday on PaperCupcakes

Good morning and welcome to PaperCupcakes last challenge of this year. I'm really sorry to say that this is my last week as a design team member. Life has been getting in the way of my crafting time lately. So I'm taking a break from being a DT member :( Hopefully life will slow down in the new year and I can get back to having some fun crafting again.

Friday Sketchers, ICS & Frosted Designs

I took out one of my all time favourite stamps today and made two cards with it. For my first one I used sketch #132 from Friday Sketchers, some Basic Grey pp, snowflakes and some ribbon and made a bow with the bow easy tool so I'm submitting it to the Frosted Designs ribbon challenge.

For my second card I used a sketch from Inspirational Card Sketches, Cuttlebug & small bubbles embossing folder, Papermania ribbon, X-Cut flower punch and a snowflake.

Christmas decoration

Good afternoon! We have had lots of snow and heavy frost here the last few days so I have made the most of being indoors by putting up the Christmas tree and decorations, which brings me on to this weeks challenge on Paper Cupcakes. Carol challenged us to make a Christmas ornament. I decided to decorate a candle with the cute gingerbread girl image from PaperCupcakes and added some ribbon and fibre and a little gem for her hair and a rose for her hand.

Hello! I can't believe we're near the end of November! Christmas is nearly here and I have so much to do. Thankfully I have nearly all my Christmas cards made though :) Ok, on to this weeks challenge on Paper Cupcakes. Nilla challenged us to make a card using the colours red & cream, so here is what I came up with

I used the cute Angel snowman image, DCWV pp, organza ribbon, bow easy, Nestabilities, Papermania gem and the sentiment - Nollaig Shona is computer generated and means happy Christmas in Irish.

I recently came across a page by Laura Vegas and I loved it so much I had to scraplift it. BLTS has a fun challenge on at the moment to scrap a family recipe, so when I seen it I just had to do a page about my mother's bbq sauce :) I'm also submitting it to Scrapbookers Anonymous's challenge, which is to use at least 3 different manufacturers patterned papers on your LO.

I used the lovely Autumn splendor image and some leaf die cuts made with my cricut and doodlecharms cart. I also used my new Victorian Fleur embossing folder by Papermania. I finished the card off with some ribbon and gems.

Hello everyone :) I have been sick all week with the flu and have been feeling sorry for myself :( so today I thought I would get my act together and do something crafty. Here are the results. It's a page of my son and his Gaelic football team. I was a very proud momma that day, seeing him all decked out in his football gear :)

I'm a bit late getting around to my PaperCupcakes post today! This weeks challenge, as you probably guessed is to make a tag. I used the lovely tea party princess image, some organza ribbon and a little pearl for my mine. As the image is so pretty I kept the colouring pretty simple by adding just a touch of some purples.

I hope you are all having a great weekend. This is just a quick post because I'm off to my nieces 5th birthday party very soon.
I made this page this morning using sketch 23 from Sketchabilities and some of my newly aquired goodies. My friend Adele moved back to the U.S from England this week and sold off some of her craft supplies to me including her Cricut, some cartridges for it, some DCWV stacks and some other goodies. I am loving the Cricut! I cut the leaves, journaling label and "love" and "to" with it and I made a birthday card for me niece with it too :) The pp on the layout is from the garden party stack, the photo corner is also DCWV . The "read" title is from Portfolia and I finished the page off with some flowers and buttons.

For this I used MME pp and the doodlecharms, opposites attract and home accents cart.

Hello everyone! I'm a day late with my There's magic in the air design team card, sorry. Between visitors, football and getting the boys ready to go back to school (they're back tomorrow), I'm running a bit behind.
Ok, so on to my card. This weeks challenge brought to us by Marie was to create a card using any Paper Cupcakes image and NO pattern paper. So this is what I came up with

I used the "beached boat" image and the Script cuttlebug embossing folder and my hubby made the knot embellishment for me. Cards for men have a challenge at the moment for "long summer days" so I'm also using the card for that challenge.

I want to say a big thank you to Fleur and Lea for the lovely blog awards! Thank you girls! You are both so sweet! I'll be back later on today or tomorrow to pass them on :)

Good afternoon! Here's a layout I created using a Sketchy Thursday sketch. I'm really happy with how it turned out, especially when I did it (sewing and all!) in under an hour for the 1 hour challenge on Club CK last night.

I can actually take out and use the sewing machine when pushed! All pp is Papermania from the Persimmon collection and the letter stickers are from BasicGrey. The flower was made with the Papermania pp too and I added a large half pearl to finish it off.

I'm so happy it's the weekend, it has been one long week! Today definately started off on a better note, because on the Club CK forum I won some Basic Grey paper! Woohoo! And I have a jug of Sangria chilling in the fridge to enjoy tonight :)
I made this layout today using this weeks Sketchy Thursday sketch and I was inspired by the challenge on Frosted designs of "celebrate life". I used some MME (bloom and grow) pp and covered some bare chipboard letters with some of the paper to make them match and added a few stars and buttons. I'm also submitting it for The Pink Elephants recipe challenge of buttons, punched borders & patterned paper.

Frosted designs challenge this week is to use an arrow on your layout or project. I made this page using Coredinations cs and some BasicGrey pp. I didn't have an arrow that would work with my colour scheme so I traced around an arrow I had and cut it out of cs, inked the edges and ran it through my Cuttlebug using the small bubbles embossing folder. I did the same with a photo corner and finished it off with some Papermania letter stickers.

Sketches in thyme

Good afternoon! I made a layout today using this weeks sketches in thyme's sketch #7. I have had this patterned paper for ages so it's nice to finally use it. The blue letter stickers are Papermania and the small letter stickers are Making Memories. The sticky ribbon is Anita's, the stars were made with a star punch and the button is Karen foster. My friend Adele posted a challenge on Club CK to use a tool that we haven't used in a long time and it's been a few months since I got my sewing machine out, so I decided to stitch around the edge in my usual "totally not straight and messy" way!

The Scrappiest bonus & Sketches in thyme

I loved the bonus sketch on The Scrappiest and thought it would be perfect for these photos. I used Coredinations navy cs and Papermania papers from the Persimmon collection (love this collection!). I added a Colorbok heart, some buttons and some journaling, done with my Dymo. The title is computer generated, I really wish I had done it a bit bigger, oh well.

For my second layout I had the perfect photo's in mind but they still haven't arrived from the printers so I'll show you what I have so far. I used a sketch from challenge 6 on Sketches in thyme. I also used BasicGrey paper , Coredinations cs that I embossed with the stars Cuttlebug folder. The title was stamped and then embossed and cut out.

Here's a mini envelope album that I created for one of the CK summer camp challenges. I used envelopes so tickets etc could be kept safe and it's easy to add to the album too. I stamped a Making Memories journaling stamp in the upper right corner that information can be wrote on. I'm back with another scrapbook page. It's great getting so many done lately and it's nice taking a break from cards! For this one I used this weeks Scrappiest sketch (I hope you can see enough of the sketch in this), some DCWV and Papermania paper. I have had the check paper so long I have no idea who makes it. The flowers are Papermania too, letters are BasicGrey (the darker one's were orange and I inked over them to make them work here) and the large pearl is from Bunny Zoe's. The photo's are from our recent trip to Barcelona :)

Hello. Today I have a layout to share of my youngest with his teacher. The title says "saying goodbye" in Irish (thanks Deanne, I hadn't thought to explain that!) as my boys go to an all Irish speaking school (Gaelscoil). I used a sketch 71 from The Scrappiest and supplies from my stash. This was a really fun sketch to use and I'll definately be using it again.

I finally got around to doing some more scrapbook pages so I thought I would share them with you all here.

This one was for a one hour challenge on Club CK. The challenge was to do a LO about what your kids have taught you.

This one is of my friend Adele and me. We have been online friends for about 4 years now and at the start of June Adele came to visit for a long weekend. It was our first time meeting in real life and we had a fantastic time together.

This is a LO of Easter of this year.

And finally this is one of my hubby and I at Nou Camp, FC Barcelona's stadium where we did the tour and then later that day seen Barcelona play Xerez :)

Good morning! Olga is our challenge hostess this week and she challenged us to use any PaperCupcakes/There's magic in the air image on a box or container. I was a bit tight for time this week so I decorated a trinket box instead of making one. I used the pretty poppies image again and a double bow made with the bow easy tool.

Good afternoon! I finally got around to making some cards. The first one is using a TGF stamp called Stella. I used some pp from my stash and this weeks Sketch Saturday sketch and lots of bling for the Anya Ink challenge.

The second is for this weeks Just Magnolia sketch challenge using Tilda with flowers and Papermania pp. I'm also entering it into the Tuesday throwdown challenge of dry embossing and Bunny Zoe's nice and girly challenge.

Julie gave us a really fun challenge of creating a recipe card using an apron template. Our card is also to incorporate a bbq recipe to fit in the apron pocket. I really enjoyed making this and it was nice and quick to make too! All papers are DCWV Nana's kitchen stack.
